My name is Vladimir Shustikov, I came to United States from Russia at the age of 14. Prior to coming to United States I did not have any social anxiety at all, I had a healthy and happy social life, I enjoyed everyday of my life, I was outgoing and it was very easy for me to make new friends. It all changed when I came to USA because I didn’t speak English at all, I had to learn from scratch, and in a couple of years I started noticing that I have become extremely shy. My life has become hell compared to the life that I used to have when I lived in Russia. I’ve been searching for the “cure” for social anxiety and I’ve tried a lot of things - therapists, psychologists, medication, audio sessions, CBT, and countless self help guides, books, communication books and none of it worked for me.

I did not give up though, I knew it was not who I really am and I had to have my happy life back, the one that I used to have while I lived in Russia. So I took psychology classes at college to really understand what is going on in the brain when anxiety kicks in, and if there are any techniques I could use to get rid of it. With the help of many self help resources, speaking to therapists and psychologists, taking psychology classes and applying what I learned I devised my own strategy to cure social anxiety and become the person I’m really meant to be.

I’m now 26 and I started working on overcoming my social anxiety using my own techniques just four months ago. I can now proudly say that I’m fully recovered from social anxiety disorder, if you don’t believe social anxiety can be cured and should be “managed” instead, like I’ve hear a lot of people say, you are wrong - it can be fully cured. However, it does take a lot of work, patience and practice. In the end is it definitely worth it, I’m now that outgoing person that I used to be when I lived in Russia and I feel very happy about it.

Some things I started doing as a result of my recovery: taking public speaking and theater classes at college, starting conversations with strangers and making new friends, talking to girls in bars/clubs and other social gatherings, asking girls for phone numbers and dating, going to social gatherings and meetings, and I’m the first person to start dancing completely sober in any club that I go to. Also I finally was able to discover my life’s passion, surprisingly its - conversation, I simply enjoy having long conversations with people, I now believe this is the greatest joy of life. I’m also dedicated to helping other people who have social anxiety. I’m writing a book on how to cure social anxiety and it will be ready in about a couple of weeks. It will have all the strategies and techniques that I’ve used to finally overcome social anxiety and become my true self.
